Union Astroturfers Out in Force for Coakley

Prior to the final televised debate of the special Senate election in Massachusetts, both sides had their supporters out in force to make a show for the media. One group sporting yellow Sheet Metal Workers Union t-shirts over their winter jackets appeared to be supporting Martha Coakley. However, an amature video showed some of those Coakley supporters speaking candidly about being paid by the union to attend.
One man said he did not want to be there but, had to come down in order to receive $50 from the Union. The Astroturf is green, even in a Massachusetts winter, if you are a Democrat running for the United States Senate.
Guess who at least one Coakley sign waver will be voting for? Even in her own rank of supporters there are defections: one of the Coakley Union employees gave a high-five to a Brown supporter and confessed that he would also be voting for Brown.
It is not a surprise that Coakley is rolling out the astroturf. If elected, her use of paid Union sign waivers is great job training for any Democrat. She will surely need to call on the unions again as a Senator, to feign support at public meetings. There are two tactics that have served Democrats well in the most recent elections: astro-turf protestors, and their ability to link a candidate to George Bush. Coakley employed both last night.
With Brown quickly closing the gap, the Coakely campaign has pulled out an ad that they hope is a winner but at the same time they have gone decidedly negative and pushed the envelope on the one quality that all Americans seem to agree on: honesty. We don’t often elect people with this quality, but everyone claims to vote for honesty.
