Democrat Representative Giffords Feigns a Public Hearing

Representative shows her support for environmentalism money, but not her support for the enviroment.
At a time when our economy is struggling to produce jobs, the left is still intent upon keeping Americans from earning a livelihood. On Saturday, Democratic Representative Gabriella Giffords held a public hearing on a proposed copper mine in her district in Southern Arizona. But rather than being a public hearing designed to share information on the project, some felt it was more accurately a public hearing designed to present only one point of view. Not surprisingly, Ms. Giffords, all four panel members and all but one speaker were against the project.
In a letter to the editor, one attendee, Marcia Devere, wrote of the event. “Today I mourned the loss of another cherished American ideal. Arizona Congresswoman, Gabriel Giffords, held a Public Meeting on a proposed copper mine in her district. She and most of the effected residents opposed the mine. All four of the presentations on the agenda favored her point of view. The opposing point of view was not included among the presenters. This was followed by comments from the audience. However, those who were allowed to speak were selected by her from opinion forms submitted by people at the beginning of the meeting. She and her staff had total control of all ideas aired in a public meeting of constituents. This made a mockery of a so-called ‘Public Meeting.’ I feel one of our basic American freedoms, set forth by our founding fathers and defended to the death by many brave men and women, has been squelched. What ever happened to free speech and to government by the people? What good is the right to assemble if it lacks the right to speak freely? This isn’t democracy, but rather 0ligarchy! Congresswoman, hang your head in shame.” Devere went on to say, “Americans, please don’t let any of our cherished Constitutional rights slip away due to apathy. Read and defend the Constitution and insist that our elected officials defend it as well.”
So what is Representative Giffords’ record on holding open forums? Is this the first time that she has tried to silence her constituency? Below is a video from a Healthcare Town Hall that Ms. Giffords scheduled but did not follow through on; fortunately, future candidate Jesse Kelly decided to show up and presented one of the more informative healthcare discussions of the August recess.
To be fair to Representative Giffords, she did explain her reasoning for not meeting with constituents. I guess she was afraid of a few signs.
Why would Representative Giffords try and stack the deck against a project that stands to bring thousands of high paying jobs to her district and a project that has every legal right to move forward? Ms. Giffords is a supporter of alternative energy sources, as many of us are. In fact, she is on the record as one of the leading proponents of solar energy in Congress. It is hard to reconcile the Congresswoman’s position given that copper is such an integral component in delivering and using solar energy. One can only infer that she would prefer her solar future to run on copper produced in countries with little environmental regulations. Though she may be a friend of the environmental moment and their money, she is not a friend of the global environment.

Hello from Russia!
Can I quote a post “No teme” in your blog with the link to you?
Exactly John, not to mention that those said foreign countries do not have the environmental protections that we do in this country— meaning they would strip the land w/o re-building or re-planting, not have emission controls, and even more importantly, on the human side of things they have horrible, unsafe working conditions, badly mistreat their labor force, and pay below poverty level wages.
If Rep.Giffords and others like her were honestly for the environment (as opposed for being in it for the money) this would be a no brainer. However, this reminds me of the Ted Kennedy / John Kerry situation where they were all for wind energy, until it was going to go up in the Cape and thus mar their view of paradise. Same old same old political games. To bad this has real consequences.
If our goverment agencies and our elected official who claim to want clean energy continue to block the mining of the commodities we need for solar and wind power we must get these commodities from foriegn countries. When this happens it will be the same as oil, the foriegn counties will be able to dictate to us on price and we will be sending more jobs overseas. Both things will be bad for our econony.
